Until now, number of the total cases of COVID-19 reaches 52.6 million, new cases rising by more than 400, 000. France, Germany and England impose new lockdown measures as cases of COVID-19 surge.
According to Reuters, more and more countries are now turning to rapid antigen tests to contain second wave of COVID-19. Antigen tests are now recommended by Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) to complement existing molecular PCR tests which have suffered shortages as new infection cases rising especially in this influenza season.
Germany, USA, Canada and Italy, are now buying millions of antigen tests. Italy does over 800,000 tests a week, but the fact is that the country needs 2 million tests a week to get on top of the virus. People can be waiting days for a test.
Gerard Krause, epidemiology department director at Germany’s Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research suggested asymptomatic patients could be screened with antigen tests, leaving the more accurate PCR tests for patients with suspected symptoms in order to speed up the screening, track the source and curb the spread of COVID-19 virus.
